No Sunset Just Yet? By Ryan Schoon mgoblue@cableone.net 7/7/2008 |

Yep, I’m a Brett Favre fan…anyone who’s read any Brett Favre thread on the Trough knows it. I take a bunch of crap for it and I frankly don’t give a damn. Of course we all knew that this “Rumor” stuff about Favre returning this year was going to come up sooner or later and of course everyone is already sick of hearing about it. Well, except me. What I don’t understand is what the big deal is? Someone please tell me how the NFL is better without Brett Favre. Someone post a logical response to how the Packers are better without Brett Favre. If you like, love, or are even a casual fan of football you have to respect the guy and the way he plays the game. Yeah, he throws some interceptions but at the same time he makes some just awesome plays….it all balances out, plus it fun as hell to watch! Let’s take a closer look at the Packer great Brett Favre and together we’ll explore the upside and down side of his possible return. First off, he was a top 6 QB last year at the age of 37 and while some people knocked his playoff record I’ll toss this out there for all you haters…Favre had the best passer rating of all the QB’s in the postseason at 99.0%, 5 Touchdowns to only 2 picks and for the Regular season Favre ranked 6th with 95.7%. For those that can’t do math that’s better than 26 starting NFL QB’s. The Packers went 13-3 for the regular season which ties a franchise best record. On top of that are the stats to back up this case….4,155 yards 28 touchdowns to only 15 picks. Now call me crazy but If I’m a GM, Coach or a fan I want Brett running my offense. The ONLY downside I can see is delaying the development of one Aaron Rodgers but at this point does that really matter? Winning NOW is/should be the goal of any GM, Coach or player and I’ll stand by this statement: Brett Favre gives the Packers THE BEST chance of winning a Super Bowl now and not Rodgers. Moving on to a bit of why I think Brett “retired” when he did. Green Bay coughTedThompsoncough has not gone after any of the high dollar free agents the last two years. I mean lets think about this for a second…Randy Moss to the Patriots for a damn 4th round pick Last year? Randy wanted to go to Green Bay and of course Ted Thompson wouldn’t ass up the pick…REALLY? If I’m Brett I’m pretty upset by that too and then the same damn thing this year…Free Agent Randy Moss and no offer from the Packers so Brett Retires. I have a hard time believing that those weren’t connected and I can’t really blame him. He’s seen the way signing Reggie White helped his team and Moss would have been the same type of impact player and put this team right there. There were other big name free agents out there…Green Bay signed a whopping ONE and it wasn’t even a big name. I would also agree with many others in the fact that Ted Thompson never really wanted Brett back this year…I’d say by his reaction (or lack thereof) to the latest rumors that he has confirmed to the NFL world that he doesn’t want him back. So were at a stand-still….stale mate if you will. How sad would it be for all of us to miss out on another year of Brett Favre slinging the football because of stubborn pride? To sum this all up in a nut shell for you, it looks as though Green Bay management wants to move on without Brett. Obviously I disagree with this IF Brett really does want to play. I think a player should go out on his own terms and play as long as he wants too…especially when that person is playing as well as Brett is. He can still play, he proved that. Brett arguably just finished his best overall season as a pro at the age of 37. To those of you who hate the “Will he/won’t he play”, just ignore that until a decision is made and then if/when he does come back, enjoy watching one of the greatest Quarterbacks to ever play the game for one more season. Watch him at 38 play like he’s 22 again. It is fun and isn’t that what this game of football is all about? At the core of this issue, I’m just a true football fan who is sick of the contract holdouts, the drug bust suspensions and the “Me, me, me” attitude of NFL players. Brett Favre gives us a glimpse of what the game is really all about. When a 38 year-old man runs around during a game with a smile on his face and flips an underhanded pass for a touchdown with defenders draped all over him…I remember why I love the game. When Brett Favre plays his best games in freezing temperatures and blowing snow while looking like he’s having the time of his life…I remember why I love the game. When he suits up and plays every single week without fail showing that blue collar work ethic…I remember why I love the game. I just don’t want that to go away. Edited by Rick Arnold |
