Beer you should Try! |
|
With Christmas weekend upon me, I realized that I better "stock up" on beer to help cope with super happy fun family time. My brother in-law was due to come into town from the Baltimore area, and I made sure to grab a few special beers for him and I to share during our 3 straight nights of family meals (ugh!). We had a delicious Dog Fish Head Burton Baton on Friday night after a giant pile of various pizzas that my wife prepared. If you haven't had Burton Baton and can find it, I strongly suggest you get some (don't let the price tag scare you, it's worth it). We also had a nice Sierra Nevada Estate ale on Saturday night as we muscled down some over-cooked food prepared by 90+ year olds. On Christmas day, I was looking forward to cracking a Sierra Nevada Northern Hemisphere Harvest Ale. I quickly put it in the basement fridge upon arrival at my in-laws and had visions of it dancing in my head immediately. We sat down to open presents shortly after arriving, and my brother in-law passed me a gift bag that had some weight to it. It didn't take much inspection to notice that it was a 6 pack and a few pint glasses. The 6 pack was National Bohemian beer. Even being a self-proclaimed beer connoisseur, I had no idea what it was. He quickly explained to me that it's a Baltimore beer. Apparently, if you are from there, you know it as Natty Boh and are very familiar with the logo above (and might even have a tattoo of it). Of course, I was intrigued to try any new beer. Later in the day, he elaborated that there is a bar that they go to down there that has it on tap for $1 a pint. This of course killed any hopes of it being any good. He also compared it to Budweiser, which is up there on my least favorite beer lists. Now that I had no desire to try it, I waited until I had a few good beers the following night and poured a Natty Boh into my Natty Boh pint glass and took a swig. It's a lack luster lager (try saying that 5 times fast after 10 beers) at best. It reminded me of keg beer that I drank in college (Busch, Labatt, etc.). I guess I don't fully understand what all of the hype is about in Baltimore, but then again, I've never even been to Baltimore, so to each their own. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend buying this beer and I have 5 more of them in my fridge, just waiting for company to try (misery loves company). Maybe if I ever visit Baltimore, and am in a bar with only $1 on me, I will consider ordering a Natty Boh. |
